Nickel Export and Disagreement between Ministers

Summary

The government's plan to restrict nickel ore exports has sparked various issues, from mining companies’ rejection to the disagreement between ministers in President Joko Widodo's administration.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan had called for the restriction and the ban on nickel ore exports. He said the government would even bring forward the export ban on low-grade nickel ore to 2020 from the initial plan in 2022. It would continue with the downstream policy in domestic nickel business. On the other front, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita complained that the ban on nickel ore export could reduce foreign exchange reserves up to US$ 4 billion.
