Nickel Export Ban Potentially Accelerated

Summary

Nickel producers are on edge as the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry is preparing regulations aiming to speed up the export ban of nickel ore. Once the law is passed and implemented next year, the nickel export ban will commence before the target in 2022. The enforcement of the ban is currently due to come in force in 2022, Kontan reported on Tuesday (8/20).

This target is set in conjunction with the target to finish smelter development. The nickel ore export ban has been regulated in Article 103 paragraph (1) on Law No. 4/2009 which requires the domestic processing and refining of mining products. However, the government granted concessions to holders of Mining Business License (IUP) for Production Operations, that had or were building smelters, to export within five years since the regulation was issued.
