Regulation Limits WhatsApp Potential

Summary

WhatsApp Inc has been holding talks with several e-payment companies to discuss the possibility to integrate e-payment services to WhatsApp. The cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) service owned by Facebook is trying to expand its financial services to Indonesia after successfully dominating the Indian market as the country with the most significant WhatsApp users.

The service introduced to the Indonesian market is slightly different from the one offered to Indian users. In India, WhatsApp provides an independent e-wallet service, while in Indonesia, it will only offer platform-based service for electronic payments from other established e-payment companies. Reuters reported on Tuesday (8/20) that the company had been approaching GO-PAY, OVO, and DANA to materialize the plan, but there had not been any official response from the companies yet.
