Mining Companies to Expand into Smelter Business

Summary

Several mining companies, particularly nickel miners, are preparing to expand their business to the downstream sector after the government will ban nickel ore export starting from January 1, 2020, two years earlier than initially indicated.

According to D-Insights' records, at least four nickel mining companies planning to build smelters, they are PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, PT Nikel Indonesia, Huayue Bahodopi, and Huayue Bahodopi. The China-based Huayue Bahodopi will build a smelter with the largest capacity, reaching 11 million tons of nickel ore per year and 60,000 tons of nickel and 7,800 tons of cobalt outputs per year.
