Zoning Rules Threaten Tin Production

Summary

National tin production, mostly produced in Bangka Belitung, is facing a decrease following the issuance of new regulations. Bangka Belitung Regional Government plans to impose a rule on Coastal Areas and Small Islands Zoning Plans (RZWP3K), which threaten the sustainability of several mining concessions.

The RZWP3K, which will be listed in the local regulation, is a follow up of Law No. 1/2014 on the Management of Coastal Areas and Small Islands and the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry prohibition of the mining industry within 0-2 miles from the coast. The provision threatens 4,140 hectares of tin ore mining areas in coastal and marine sectors across Bangka Belitung, including a concession owned by PT Timah Tbk. The state-owned miner holds a 138,000 hectare-wide marine Mining Permit (IUP) in Bangka Belitung.
