Ceramic Import Protection Opens up Expansion Opportunities
National ceramics producers are spurring production to take advantage of the declining imported Chinese products on the market. Opportunities to dominate the market are wide open after the government imposed safeguard policy, a trade protection measure by applying import duties for ceramic products from China.
The policy is contained in the Finance Minister Regulation (PMK) No. 119/PMK.010/2018 set out on September 19, 2018, and took effect on October 12, 2018. The Import duty is valid for three years by 23 percent in the first year, 21 percent in the second year, and 19 percent in the third year. After the safeguard takes effect, producers immediately set a production target to 430 million square meters in 2019, a nine percent higher from the 2018 production. Several factories are preparing to increase production as well.
