Transportation Ministry to Ban Over-Capacity Trucks in 2020

Summary

Starting in 2020, the government will ban over-dimensional and overloaded trucks (ODOL) from passing the tolls. The decision, hopefully, will reduce the number of damaged roads and accidents.  Several weeks ago, an overloaded dump truck caused a multiple-vehicle collision in Cipularang toll road. There were at least 21 vehicles involved, and nine people killed in the crash. “In the future, we will force [such trucks] out of the toll road,” Transportation Ministry, Budi Karya Sumadi, vowed in a written statement.

At the moment, the Transportation Ministry’s Directorate-General for Land Transportation is weighing trucks three times a week. Such a measure has successfully reduced the number of over-dimensional and overloaded trucks from around 70 percent to 40 percent. Additionally, PT Jasa Marga TBK plans to install detector cameras in various places within the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) toll roads at the end of 2019.
