Spreading Garuda Indonesia’s Wings to Cargo Business
PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk will continue to develop the cargo market. The state-owned airline plans to purchase eight freighter aircrafts next year, adding to the existing three planes which started operating this year. The airline will expand the cargo flight business overseas, using a wide-body Airbus A-330 fleet for international cargo routes, such as to China and Japan, which can carry 60 tons of cargo.
Indonesian exports are potential for Garuda's international cargo, GIAA Cargo and Business Development Director Mohammad Iqbal told Kontan, adding that fisheries are one of the commodities that the airline is after. Garuda targets China for live grouper and Japan for processed tuna exports. On the other hand, Garuda also spurs a largely-potential domestic market along with the rapid development of e-commerce business.
